Sham Shui Po Events - December 2027

December closes the district's year with lights, sales and a quiet stretch between the holidays. Christmas Day falls on Saturday 25 December and the first weekday after Christmas on Monday 27 December; New Year's Eve follows on Friday 31 December. The festive lighting that went up in November is still on, the electronics floors and the garment streets run their winter promotions, and the weather is cool and dry enough to make walking the markets a pleasure again. The wholesale trade goes quiet in the last week as the units close for the year.

πŸŽ„ The holiday dates

Christmas

πŸ“… Saturday 25 December 2027, with the first weekday after Christmas on Monday 27 December (general holidays)

The malls and chain shops decorate and trade hard through the season, while the small wholesale units on Cheung Sha Wan Road and Ki Lung Street close for the holidays. The district's festive lights - switched on in November - stay up through the New Year.

πŸ“ Where: District-wide, Sham Shui Po

🎟️ Entry: Free

Why go: The Christmas lights over a working street are a very different photograph from the harbourfront version, and the crowds are a fraction of the size.

New Year's Eve

πŸ“… Friday 31 December 2027 - not a public holiday; the New Year holiday itself falls on 1 January

The district's restaurants and late-night kitchens fill up and the markets trade into the evening. The city's big celebrations are elsewhere in Hong Kong rather than here; in Sham Shui Po it is a night for eating, not for a countdown.

πŸ“ Where: District-wide, Sham Shui Po

🎟️ Entry: Free

Why go: Book a table in one of the district's Cha Chaan Tengs or noodle shops, eat late, and leave the harbourfront crowds to everyone else.

πŸ›οΈ Winter sales and the last shopping week

Electronics and garment street promotions

πŸ“… Year-round fixtures - the Golden Computer Arcade trades daily 10:00-22:00; the Apliu Street precinct pedestrianises daily from noon (best 14:00-18:00)

December is the district's best shopping month after August. The Golden Computer Arcade at 146-152 Fuk Wa Street (also written Fuk Wah Street) and the Golden Computer Centre at 94A Yen Chow Street run winter promotions on components, peripherals and phones, and the garment and fabric wholesalers on Cheung Sha Wan Road and Yu Chau Street are clearing winter stock. Shop before Christmas rather than after: the trade closes down for the last days of the year.

πŸ“ Where: Golden Computer Arcade, 146-152 Fuk Wa Street; Golden Computer Centre, 94A Yen Chow Street; Cheung Sha Wan Road and Yu Chau Street; MTR Sham Shui Po Exit A2

🎟️ Entry: Free to browse

Why go: It is the one month when the district has both a sales season and comfortable walking weather at the same time.

History

Populated for at least 2000 years according to archeological evidence the history of Sham Shui Po is long and deep but poorly documented. Having been a poor area for much of the 20th century little attention was given to it but now that has become developed and busy, though still not as prosperous as some other parts of Hong Kong, people have begun to seek it's history.

Originally a coastal settlement before reclamation brought it inland it was close to the important peninsular of Tak Kok Tsui with it's Cosmopolitan Dock, now since long gone of course. The last of the connection with the sea disappeared in the 1970s when the Nam Cheong Street nullah, or concrete stream, was covered over and today all that remains of it is the wide street which now runs past the open green park.
