Sham Shui Po Opening Hours

Other pages on this site give Sham Shui Po different opening times. They disagree with each other and none of them quotes the market operator. This page is the single place to check: every time below comes from the market operator or a government source, and where an hour could not be confirmed we say so rather than guess. If you only remember one thing, make it this — the government markets open early and shut at 8:00 p.m., and Apliu Street does not really start until midday.

The one-minute answer

• FEHD public markets: open 6:00 a.m., close 8:00 p.m., every day.
• Cooked food centres at Pei Ho Street Market and Po On Road Market serve from 6:00 a.m. until 2:00 a.m.
• Apliu Street Flea Market: pedestrian-only from noon every day, closing 9:00 p.m. on weekdays and later at weekends and on public holidays.
• Sundays: a normal trading day for the government markets; Apliu Street is livelier after dark at the weekend.

Government public market hours

These are the four public markets the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) lists for the Sham Shui Po district. FEHD publishes one daily trading span for each; it does not list a separate Sunday or public-holiday timetable, so the same hours apply seven days a week.

MarketAddressMarket hoursCooked food centre
Pei Ho Street Market Pei Ho Street Municipal Services Building, 333 Ki Lung Street, Sham Shui Po 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.

Po On Road Market 325–329 Po On Road, Cheung Sha Wan 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.
Lai Wan Market 8 Lai Wan Road, Mei Foo 6:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. daily None listed

These are FEHD’s published market hours, and stall-level variation exists: an individual trader within a market may open late or pack up early. Pei Ho Street Market is the largest, with 234 stalls covering fresh fish, vegetables, meat, poultry, fruit and cooked food.

Apliu Street: the hours that actually matter

For the electronics and flea market most visitors come for, the figure that matters is not a shop opening time but the pedestrian-precinct schedule. According to the Hong Kong Tourism Board, Apliu Street becomes a pedestrian precinct from noon every day and closes at 9:00 p.m. on weekdays; at weekends and on public holidays it comes alive after dark with extended shopping hours.

That is why you will find different Apliu Street times on this site — “10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.”, “10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. (Monday–Saturday)” and “11:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.”. None of those is an operator-sourced figure; the noon pedestrianisation and the 9:00 p.m. weekday close are. Plan around midday and later, not around a 10:00 a.m. opening.

Apliu Street sells phone accessories, audio and electrical cables, batteries, film cameras, alarm clocks and second-hand devices such as radios and vintage typewriters. Once the stalls begin closing, see what is still open late in the district.

Sundays and public holidays

The question readers actually ask is whether a Sunday trip works. For the government markets the answer is yes: FEHD publishes a single span of 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. with no Sunday exclusion and no separate public-holiday closure. For Apliu Street the tourism board is explicit that weekends and public holidays bring extended hours, so a Sunday evening is the livelier time to go.

What this page will not do is tell you which day is “busiest” or which hour is “best”. No primary source publishes crowd levels by day or hour, so any such claim is guesswork.

Plan around the clock

Everything below is drawn from the verified hours above, so you can time a visit without a shop-by-shop list:

• 6:00 a.m.: the FEHD markets open for the early fresh-produce trade.
• Noon: Apliu Street closes to traffic and the flea market sets up.
• Afternoon: the fabric and jade market inside Tung Chau Street Temporary Market trades through the FEHD window.
• 8:00 p.m.: the FEHD markets close.
• 9:00 p.m.: Apliu Street’s weekday close — later at weekends and on public holidays.
• Until 2:00 a.m.: the cooked food centres at Pei Ho Street and Po On Road keep serving; see the food tour guide.

MTR and getting home

Sham Shui Po station is on the MTR Tsuen Wan Line, and trains run frequently enough that you only need to think about the timetable late at night. The published frequencies are:

MTR Tsuen Wan Line train frequency
Service periodFrequency
Weekday morning peakAbout every 2.1 minutes
Weekday evening peakAbout every 2.1 minutes
Weekday non-peakEvery 3.5–5 minutes
SaturdayEvery 2.2–4.2 minutes
Sunday and public holidaysEvery 3.1–5 minutes

For first and last train times at Sham Shui Po, use MTR’s own service-hours search — the operator is the only current source, and we do not print first or last times here. Our transportation hub guide and how to get to Sham Shui Po page cover the walk from each exit to the markets.

What we could not verify

Mall-level opening hours in Sham Shui Po are set by the operators and change without notice. We could not confirm current centre-wide hours for Golden Computer Arcade, Golden Computer Centre or Dragon Centre from the operators at the time of writing, so we have not printed any. Before planning a trip around a particular mall, check the operator’s own website. The same applies to individual shops and cafés: there is no single reliable source for shop-by-shop hours, so this page does not publish a list of them.

History

Populated for at least 2000 years according to archeological evidence the history of Sham Shui Po is long and deep but poorly documented. Having been a poor area for much of the 20th century little attention was given to it but now that has become developed and busy, though still not as prosperous as some other parts of Hong Kong, people have begun to seek it's history.

Originally a coastal settlement before reclamation brought it inland it was close to the important peninsular of Tak Kok Tsui with it's Cosmopolitan Dock, now since long gone of course. The last of the connection with the sea disappeared in the 1970s when the Nam Cheong Street nullah, or concrete stream, was covered over and today all that remains of it is the wide street which now runs past the open green park.
